The Sokoto State House of Assembly has passed the Sokoto Emirate Council Amendment Bill through its second reading. If enacted, this bill will significantly reduce the powers of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III.
The proposed amendment aims to strip the Sultan of the authority to unilaterally appoint kingmakers and district heads. Instead, these appointments would require government approval.
The move follows concerns raised by the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) about an alleged plan by Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, to depose the Sultan.
While the state government denies any such intent, tensions remain high, especially after the controversial deposition of several monarchs in Kano State.
