In a surprising turn of events, Finidi George has stepped down from his role as the head coach of Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles.
The decision came shortly after the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) revealed plans to hire a foreign technical advisor, leading to speculation that this influenced Finidi’s resignation.
The news was made public by Toyin Ibitoye, a former media officer for the Eagles, through his X social media account, stating: “Breaking: Finidi George @FinidiGeorge_FG steps down as manager of @NGSuperEagles.”
Appointed on April 29, 2024, as a successor to Jose Peseiro whose contract ended in February, Finidi’s short-lived leadership saw the Super Eagles through a draw and a loss in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers—a 1-1 tie with South Africa and a 2-1 loss against Benin Republic.
