Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, the Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission, has declared an impending overhaul of the Universal Basic Education Act of 2004.
This move aims to address the current challenges and ambiguities affecting the basic education sector.
Revealed at a two-day strategic retreat with the Senate Committee on Education (Basic and Secondary), Dr. Bobboyi emphasized the necessity of updating the legislation to align with the evolving educational demands and global standards.
Under the theme “Basic Education Implementation in Nigeria: Issues, Challenges and Way Forward,” Dr. Bobboyi highlighted the legislative hurdles that have been obstructing the effective execution of the Universal Basic Education program.
He stressed the importance of legislative reform to reflect the nation’s educational ambitions and to keep pace with international best practices since the Act’s original passage in 2004.
Senator Gbenga Daniel, the former Governor of Ogun State and current representative of Ogun East, who also chaired the retreat, urged the National Assembly to prioritize educational enhancements. He advocated for increased funding, infrastructural upgrades, teacher training, and the decentralization of local governance and school management to boost efficiency.
