The leadership of organized labour has declared an indefinite nationwide strike commencing Monday.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) announced the strike following a joint emergency meeting on Friday in Abuja.
During the May Day celebration, labour had issued an ultimatum to the Federal Government to conclude negotiations on a new national minimum wage by May 31.
TUC President Festus Osifo informed the press that the strike became necessary after the government declined to increase the N60,000 wage it offered during Friday’s Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage meeting.
Osifo added that the strike was also in response to the government’s refusal to reverse the recent hike in electricity tariffs.
“We are hereby declaring the commencement of a nationwide industrial action, effective from Sunday midnight June 2 , 2024,and this strike shall be indefinite,” he said.
“We are united on this and we believe that this is the way forward,” he said.
