In a surprising development within the Kano Emirate saga, a state High Court has issued an order for the eviction of deposed Emir Aminu Ado Bayero from the Nasarawa Palace.
Justice Amina Aliyu granted an interim injunction that restrains Bayero and other emirs—specifically those of Bichi, Rano, Gaya, and Karaye—from parading themselves as monarchs.
The court order will remain in effect pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice filed by the applicants.
The decision comes after an ex-parte application presented by the state’s counsel, Ibrahim Isa Wangida.
Notably, this ruling follows closely on the heels of a Federal High Court order in Kano that restrained the state government from enforcing the Emirate Council Repeal Law, which had led to the reinstatement of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II.
The specifics of the court order are as follows:
“That an order of interim injunction is hereby granted restraining the first, second, third, fourth and fifth defendants either by themselves, servants, privies, and or any other persons or officers serving under them or acting in connection with any other person from parading themselves as Emirs of Kano, Bichi, Gaya, Rano and Karaye pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice filed by the applicants.
“That an order is hereby granted to the extent that the Commissioner of Police Kano State should immediately take over the palace of the Emir of Kano situated at State Road Kano and evict the first defendant/respondent from the said palace pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice dated 24 May, 2024.
“That an order of this hon. court is hereby granted restraining the first, second, third, fourth and fifth Defendants from parading themselves as Emirs of Kano, Bichi, Gaya, Rano and Karaye in the interest of peace in Kano pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.”
The Commissioner of Police, Kano State, is directed to take immediate action to secure the Emir of Kano’s palace located on State Road Kano.
Emir Aminu Ado Bayero is to be evicted from the palace while the motion on notice, dated May 24, 2024, is pending.
The case is scheduled for a hearing on June 11 when further decisions will be made.
