The United States is poised to impose sanctions on International Criminal Court (ICC) officials following the court’s move to seek arrest warrants for Israeli leaders over the Gaza war.
According to the Guardian UK, the US is prepared to collaborate with Congress to implement sanctions against ICC officials.
This development comes after ICC prosecutor Karim Khan requested arrest warrants for Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in connection with the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken revealed this stance during a Senate appropriations subcommittee hearing on Tuesday.
Republican Senator Lindsey Graham pressed Blinken for a commitment to renew US sanctions on the ICC, criticizing the court’s actions and emphasizing the need to protect US interests.
“I want to take actions, not just words,” Graham stated. “Will you support [a] bipartisan effort to sanction the ICC, not only for the outrage against Israel but to protect, in the future, our own interest?”
“I welcome working with you on that,” Blinken responded.
