The National Universities Commission (NUC) has confirmed that the Federal Government is in the final stages of forming new governing councils for federal universities nationwide.
Executive Secretary Chris Maiyaki revealed that a committee, established by Education Minister Prof. Tahir Mamman, is finalizing the selection of council members.
Maiyaki assured that the inauguration of the councils is forthcoming, addressing concerns raised by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) regarding the urgency of reestablishing these councils for the effective governance of public universities.
Responding to ASUU’s two-week ultimatum, Maiyaki acknowledged the complexity of appointing councils for 61 universities but emphasized the government’s commitment to appointing individuals with the necessary qualifications and background.
He appealed to ASUU for patience as the government works through the process, which has been a priority since the NUC’s announcement last year to dissolve existing councils following President Bola Tinubu’s directive to disband boards across various government entities.
