Raphael Varane, the esteemed French defender, has declared his departure from Manchester United at the close of this season, marking the end of his contract and a three-year tenure with the club.
Varane, 31, transitioned to Manchester United from Real Madrid in 2021 for an estimated £34 million ($43 million). During his time at Old Trafford, he made 93 appearances and scored two goals. He was instrumental in securing the club’s first trophy in six years—the 2023 League Cup.
Despite this achievement, Manchester United has struggled this season, currently sitting in eighth place in the Premier League with 14 losses, casting doubt on their European qualification prospects.
Injuries have marred Varane’s time at United, with his last game being a 4-3 loss to Chelsea on April 4. However, he remains hopeful of returning to play before the season concludes.
Varane expressed his gratitude to Manchester United fans via social media, reminiscing about the extraordinary atmosphere he experienced at Old Trafford and his deep connection with the club and its supporters.
“To you guys, supporters of Manchester United it’s been an amazing few years to play for this special club and wear that shirt,”
“The first time I went to Old Trafford as a Man United player was insane, the atmosphere was amazing.
“I fell in love with the club, with the fans. You have to play for Man United to understand what that represents.”
“Despite the fact we had a difficult season, I’m very positive for the future. The new owners (United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe) are coming with a clear plan and a great strategy.”
Erik ten Hag, Manchester United’s manager, is eager for Varane to contribute to the team’s success in the upcoming FA Cup final.
“We plan [for] him,” said Ten Hag.
“Definitely for the last games. Not tomorrow but we hope for Sunday and then, of course, for the last game (the FA Cup final).”
Manchester United acknowledged Varane’s decision to leave, praising his exceptional class and experience, which have been pivotal in the team’s defense.
Varane’s illustrious career includes four Champions League titles and three La Liga championships during his decade at Real Madrid.
He also played a key role in France’s 2018 World Cup victory and their journey to the 2022 World Cup final.
At 29, Varane retired from international football, highlighting the intense demands placed on top-tier players.
He has also raised concerns about the long-term effects of concussions on players’ health.
