Korra Obidi, a well-known Nigerian-American dancer, has come under fire from netizens for what they claim is the misappropriation of her $50,000 GoFundMe campaign funds, which were allegedly used for a holiday in Hawaii instead of legal fees.
Initially, Obidi launched the fundraiser with the intention of securing a competent attorney to represent her in a custody battle with her ex-husband, Justin Dean, concerning their children.
The campaign quickly surpassed the halfway mark of its $100,000 goal, drawing support from over 950 global donors.
Obidi, asserting her maternal rights, appealed to her supporters, “It’s time I stand up for myself and my children,” while promoting her fundraising efforts.
However, the narrative took an unexpected turn when, after amassing the funds, Obidi announced plans for a Hawaiian getaway during a live Facebook broadcast.
This revelation sparked a wave of criticism online, with many accusing her of exploiting the fundraiser for personal indulgence rather than its stated legal purpose.
The controversy follows an ongoing public divorce and custody dispute with Dean, which has recently led to a court decision allowing him to limit their children’s appearances in Obidi’s online posts.
Amidst these developments, Obidi has publicly accused Dean of past abuse and manipulation, voicing concerns over their daughters’ welfare.
