In a surprising turn of events, the speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, has unilaterally suspended three lawmakers.
The suspension, which occurred on Monday, May 6, has raised eyebrows and sparked heated debates.
The reasons behind the suspension are twofold.
First, there were reports of an alleged juju scare within the Assembly complex.
Second, there were whispers of a plot to impeach Agbebaku and other principal officers. These allegations have added fuel to the already contentious situation.
The lawmakers affected by the suspension are as follows:
- Donald Okogbe (PDP, Akoko-Edo II)
- Bright Iyamu (PDP, Orhionmwon II)
- Adeh Isibor (All Progressives Congress, APC, Esan Northeast I)
Agbebaku, in his announcement, accused the suspended lawmakers of being influenced by external forces bent on causing chaos and destabilizing the Assembly.
He went further, claiming that native doctors were brought into the Assembly complex at midnight on May 1, 2024, where they allegedly performed demonic incantations and left behind charms.
The suspension has sent shockwaves through the Assembly, with the affected lawmakers vehemently opposing the action.
“Mr. Speaker, you do not have the right to unilaterally suspend any member of this House. You must call for votes. Allow members of the Assembly to vote on the matter.” the affected lawmakers said.
In an attempt to ease tensions, Agbebaku promptly adjourned the plenary session.
