A devastating road accident claimed the lives of seventeen individuals on the Enugu-Nsukka Expressway in Enugu State this Tuesday.
The police spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, reported that the incident occurred around 5:20 pm on April 30, near Ekwegbe on the Enugu/Opi/Nsukka Road, leaving the victims unidentifiable due to the severity of the fire.
The crash involved an 18-seater Hummer bus marked with ‘Masha Allah’ and was en route to Nsukka from Enugu at high speed.
The origin and intended destination of the bus remain unknown, although it was carrying food items and is believed to have been headed north. Authorities have retrieved the victims’ belongings.
The driver reportedly lost control, causing the bus to crash into the perimeter of Maduka University before erupting in flames.
Two survivors were rescued and are currently receiving medical attention.
The Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, alongside the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officials, inspected the accident site. Uzuegbu expressed sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the families and friends of the deceased, whose identities are yet to be determined.
He urged the community to assist in identifying the deceased and locating their next of kin.
