Paris Saint-Germain has been crowned Ligue 1 champions for a record 12th time, clinching the title without setting foot on the pitch, as their closest rivals, Monaco, suffered a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Lyon.
With Monaco’s stumble, PSG now holds an insurmountable 12-point lead atop the league standings, with only three fixtures left in the season.
This triumph marks the club’s French record-extending 12th championship win.
Although PSG had the opportunity to secure the title during their match against Le Havre on Saturday, they ultimately required a last-gasp equalizer in the 95th minute to salvage a 3-3 draw.
Post-match, coach Luis Enrique confidently declared that his team had undoubtedly secured the league title, given their substantial lead and significantly better goal difference compared to Monaco.
Monaco’s defeat not only confirms PSG’s league victory but also primes them for the upcoming Champions League semi-final first leg against Borussia Dortmund in Germany.
The match in Lyon saw Monaco seize an early lead with a goal from Wissam Ben Yedder, but Lyon’s Alexandre Lacazette leveled the score, and Said Benrahma tipped the scales in Lyon’s favor before the break.
Ben Yedder’s second goal evened the score once more, only for Lyon’s substitute Malick Fofana to score a decisive late goal, keeping Lyon’s European aspirations alive.
PSG’s dominance is evident, with 10 of their 12 titles won in the past 12 seasons, showcasing the transformative impact of the Qatari ownership since 2011 on both the club and French football.
The Parisian giants are on a quest for a complete trophy haul this season, looking forward to the French Cup final against Lyon on May 25, with the French Champions Trophy already secured.
Under Luis Enrique’s leadership, PSG is also aiming to overcome Dortmund and advance to the Champions League final on June 1.
