Nigeria is set to become the center of attention in the tennis world as it has been granted the prestigious opportunity to host the 2024 Davis Cup Africa Group II qualifiers.
This development ensures that Nigerian tennis players will enjoy the roaring support of their home crowd during the competition.
The journey to this momentous occasion began with the Nigerian team’s stellar performance in Kigali, Rwanda, in 2023, which earned them a spot in Group III of the Davis Cup, alongside Ghana.
The formidable Nigerian team, comprising David Ekpenyong, Uche Oparaoji, Wilson Igbinovia, Peter Lawal, and Christopher Bulus, and under the guidance of Coach Benson Ishicheli, showcased their dominance in Rwanda, securing their advancement to Group III.
With the confirmation of hosting rights, the path to Group II will unfold in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja. The bid to host the event was placed earlier this year and has now been confirmed.
Engr. Ifedayo Akindoju, President of the Nigeria Tennis Federation, marked the calendar with a simple yet significant affirmation: “Yes, 15th July.”
This date signals the beginning of Nigeria’s hosting duties for the event starting from 15 July 2024.
Adding to the confirmation, Secretary General of the Federation, Makpa Aliyu, acknowledged the official communication from the International Tennis Federation (ITF), stating, “Yes, I can now confirm to you that Nigeria will be hosting the Davis Cup Group III qualifier this year. I have the letter sent by the ITF with me and I can confirm it to you, officially, that we are preparing to host the other nations.”
The qualifying round will witness a fierce competition among Namibia, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Cote d’Ivoire, Benin, and Nigeria, all vying for two coveted spots in Group II.
