In a recurring issue plaguing the nation’s power infrastructure, Nigeria’s national electricity grid has suffered its sixth shutdown within the year.
The most recent incident occurred at approximately 2:41 am on Monday, causing power generation to plummet to a mere 64.70 megawatts.
According to the Independent System Operator (ISO), a subsidiary of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, the aftermath of the collapse left only Ibom Power operational among the generation companies.
Further data from the ISO, recorded at 8 am on Monday, indicated that power generation had partially recovered, reaching 266.50 megawatts thanks to contributions from Okpai, Geregu, and Ibom power plants.
Local power distribution companies have been proactive in notifying their customers about the situation through various statements.
Abuja Disco addressed its customers via its official social media, stating: : “Dear valued customers, please be informed that the current power outage is due to a system failure from the National Grid. The system collapsed at about 02:41 hours today Monday April 15th, 2024. We appeal for your understanding as all stakeholders are working hard to restore normal supply. Meanwhile, gradual restoration has started.”
Echoing this message, Jos DisCo, through its Corporate Affairs head, Dr. Friday Adakole Elijah, confirmed the incident: “The current outage being experienced within our franchise States is a result of loss of power supply from the national grid. The loss of power supply from the national grid occurred in the early hours at about 0242Hours of today, Monday, 15th April 2024, hence the loss of power supply on all our feeders.”
Jos DisCo remains hopeful that the grid will be swiftly restored to ensure the resumption of regular power supply to its valued customers.
