On a day marked by Eid-el-Fitri festivities, a grave incident unfolded on Lagos’s 3rd Mainland Bridge.
A 20-seater bus collided with the bridge’s railings, resulting in two passengers being ejected into the Lagoon below.
The accident, which took place around 11:30 am, was reportedly caused by the bus driver’s excessive speed, leading to a loss of control and subsequent impact with the bridge’s barriers.
The bus, registered as FKJ 872 YA, narrowly avoided plunging into the Lagoon thanks to the railings.
Rescue operations were swiftly initiated, with teams from LASEMA, the Police, and other agencies responding to the emergency. Traffic was heavily affected, causing significant delays.
Taofik Adebayo, the spokesperson for LASTMA, confirmed the incident and stated that 18 passengers had been hospitalized with serious injuries.
The driver fled the scene, and efforts are ongoing to rescue any passengers who may have fallen into the water.
LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, has since issued a caution against speeding and advised motorists to ensure their vehicles are thoroughly inspected before travel.
The rescue and recovery efforts continue, with hopes for the safety of all involved.
