In a significant political development, Pascal Ugbomhe is poised to assume the role of Deputy Governor of Edo State, succeeding Comrade Philip Shaibu, until the conclusion of the latter’s term on November 12, 2024.
This transition is pending the final decision of Governor Godwin Obaseki.
Ugbomhe, sharing the same Etsako heritage as Shaibu, is a prominent figure within the Legacy Coalition of the Edo chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Chief Dan Orbih.
His selection is strategically aimed at garnering support from Orbih and his followers for the upcoming governorship election on September 21, 2024.
Governor Obaseki is reportedly keen on securing a stronghold in the Edo North Senatorial District, where Senator Adams Oshiomhole, a former APC National Chairman and ex-governor, currently serves.
Ugbomhe’s influence is expected to boost the prospects of PDP’s gubernatorial candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, in this region, countering the sway of Oshiomhole and Shaibu.
A law alumnus of the University of Benin and former Chairman of the Etsako Central Local Government Council, Ugbomhe is anticipated to rally support from Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, a key governorship aspirant and former House of Representatives member, to back Ighodalo’s bid, fostering unity within the Edo PDP.
The investigative panel led by retired Justice Stephen Omonua concluded its inquiry into the allegations against Shaibu on March 25.
The panel’s findings are expected to be submitted to Edo’s Chief Judge, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, which will inform the state lawmakers’ decision on Shaibu’s potential impeachment.
