President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone has officially declared the rampant drug abuse in the nation, particularly the widespread use of the synthetic drug ‘Kush’, a ‘national emergency’.
In a recent national address, President Bio unveiled a comprehensive strategy to tackle the issue that targets the youth demographic.
Kush, known for its cannabis-like effects, has been a persistent problem for years.
President Bio emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “As the nation’s leader, I am compelled to declare a national emergency on drug abuse.”
He further highlighted the existential threat posed by drug addiction and the specific challenges brought on by Kush.
To combat this, a dedicated task force comprising government bodies and non-profit organizations has been established to focus on prevention, rehabilitation, legal enforcement, and community outreach.
In addition to these measures, President Bio confirmed ongoing efforts to dismantle drug trafficking rings.
This was underscored by a recent operation where police, led by Commissioner Joseph Lahai, confiscated two containers filled with Kush in Freetown, resulting in the arrest of seven individuals.
