Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has proclaimed Friday, April 5th, 2024, as a day off for government workers.
This measure is to facilitate their participation in the upcoming local government elections scheduled for the following day.
The announcement was made through a memorandum from Biobelemoye Charles-Onyema, the head of the state’s civil service.
The memo clarified that the exemption does not apply to civil servants performing critical duties.
In the lead-up to the elections, there has been a noticeable silence from political parties other than the incumbent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with no candidates announced for the impending local government elections in the state.
