The Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) has revealed key insights into the funding sources of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), uncovering a network spanning 22 countries worldwide, including the United States and the United Kingdom.
According to NFIU documents, the US and the UK host the largest numbers of IPOB cells, with seven and six operating cells respectively in each country.
These revelations came to light in a newsletter exposing the financing of terror activities in Nigeria by IPOB, bandits, and other extremist groups, utilizing global crowdfunding and sports betting platforms.
Since its proscription by the Federal Government in 2017 and classification as a terrorist organization, IPOB, led by Nnamdi Kanu, has faced scrutiny, with Kanu currently facing trial for terrorism-related charges.
The NFIU’s “Counter Terrorism Financial Newsletter” connects IPOB operations to 54 individuals worldwide, highlighting 27 registered entities linked to the group globally, with a concentration in the US and the UK.
Detailed financial analysis indicates that IPOB maintains multiple bank accounts in various countries, receiving funds under various pretexts such as “Monthly Dues” and “Services” before allocating them to different operations.
One significant revenue stream identified is crowdfunding, predominantly from Nigerians abroad, with over $160,000 dispersed to media and broadcasting companies in Bulgaria, South Africa, and the United Kingdom.
The report also profiles IPOB’s leader, along with addresses and mobile numbers abroad, alongside 53 other individuals associated with the group, prompting further investigation by law enforcement agencies.
