The Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) has urged the National Assembly Constitutional Review Committee to include their proposal for integration into the Nigeria Police Force and broader security framework.
The call comes in the wake of a submission made by the VGN to the House of Representatives in Abuja on Tuesday.
Navy Captain Umar Bakori (rtd.), the Commandant General of VGN, emphasized the importance of supporting vigilante activities rather than opting for the establishment of State Police, which could exacerbate existing challenges in Nigeria.
Bakori highlighted the underutilization of funds allocated for community policing initiatives under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, citing the approved N13 billion for training and equipping 40,000 volunteers in 2020 without significant progress.
He emphasized the urgency for the federal government to approve the bill currently before the president, seeking to formalize the establishment of VGN.
