The Falconets’ quest to retain their gold medal at the African Games remains on track following a decisive 2-0 victory over Uganda, propelling them into the competition’s football final.
The Nigerian team secured their win with late goals from substitutes Okah Adaobi and Chiamaka Okwuchukwu in the 74th and 89th minutes, respectively.
Under Coach Christopher Danjuma, the Falconets dominated possession throughout a challenging first half in Monday’s semi-final clash.
Despite their efforts, the Ugandan defence proved difficult to penetrate, leading to a goalless draw at halftime.
The second half saw Nigeria intensify their efforts, culminating in two strategic substitutions with roughly 19 minutes remaining.
Adaobi replaced Olusola Shobowale, and Chiamaka took over for Motunrayo Ezekiel, moves that would ultimately shift the game’s momentum.
Adaobi’s entry made an immediate impact, netting a goal just three minutes later. Nigeria nearly extended their lead shortly after, but an offside ruling negated the effort.
Persistence paid off when Okwuchukwu, another fresh addition to the field, found the back of the net, cementing Nigeria’s win at Cape Coast Stadium.
The Falconets’ triumph sets them up for a chance to defend their 2019 title, as they await the outcome of the match between Ghana and Senegal to determine their opponent in the final showdown for the gold medal.
