Governor Ademola Adeleke of OSUN State faces legal action in a state High Court in Ikirun concerning the appointment of Prince Muritala Oyelakin as the new Aree of Iree in the Boripe North Local Government Area.
Prince Ali Afolabi, a contestant to the Aree throne, filed the lawsuit, alleging that the governor violated the law in the appointment process.
The suit names the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in the state, and Prince Muritala Oyelakin, the newly appointed monarch, as co-defendants.
Afolabi, from the Olubonku Ruling House in Iree town, contends that Governor Adeleke failed to follow due process by approving Oyelakin’s selection before the statutory 21 days, thereby contravening Section 20, sub-section (2) of the Chief’s Law (cap.25) Laws of Osun State, 2002.
The plaintiff’s legal team, led by Oluwaseun Ajoba Esq, Folorunso Apantaku Esq, and Oluwatosin Ajoba Esq, asserts that the appointment process disregarded the rule of law and due process.
The plaintiff seeks the nullification of the entire selection process, arguing that it was unconstitutional and fraudulent.
Additionally, they demand a declaration affirming that only the Olubonku ruling house is authorized to present candidates for the Aree Chieftaincy, citing historical precedence.
The lawsuit also requests injunctions to prevent the defendants from accepting candidates from other ruling houses and restraining Oyelakin from assuming the position of Aree of Iree King.
