World Trade Organization Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has urged the federal government to prioritize the safe release of students abducted by bandits in Sokoto and Kaduna states.
Speaking in Abuja during the launch of the WTO-ITC 2024 technical assistance program for Nigeria, Okonjo-Iweala expressed her sorrow over the recent abductions.
“I am deeply saddened by the news of yet another abduction of hundreds of school children and teachers,” she remarked.
“As a mother, grandmother, educator, and advocate for education’s role in creating economic opportunities, this news weighs heavily on me.
“Addressing the urgent need for action, she added, “I am hopeful that with the support of my colleague, the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, we can swiftly secure the release of these students in Kaduna and Sokoto.
“Recently, over 200 students were abducted from Government Secondary School Kuriga in Chikun LGA of Kaduna, while in Sokoto’s Gada Local Government Area, bandits abducted approximately 15 Tsangaya students, with others still missing.
