The Department of State Services (DSS) has confirmed multiple attacks on warehouses and food trucks in the north-east region of the country.During a statement on Friday in Damaturu, Babagana Bulama, the chairman of the North-East Forum of the DSS, highlighted that the increasing cost of goods has contributed to these attacks.
Bulama pointed out that the nation’s economic crisis is exacerbated by soaring inflation rates, which reached about 29.90 percent in January, and a rapidly escalating foreign exchange rate.He stated,
“The current circumstances are marked by growing insecurity, with criminal activities such as Boko Haram insurgency, banditry, and kidnapping prevalent.
Social security issues, including food crises, hoarding of foodstuffs, hunger, and threats of protests by organized labor groups like the Nigeria Labour Congress, are also on the rise.”Bulama further explained, “The surge in prices of goods has emboldened criminals to exploit these challenges by targeting warehouses and vehicles transporting goods, particularly food items, across state borders.
Additionally, economic saboteurs are taking advantage of the situation to undermine the economy. It’s noteworthy that all of this is occurring just a year after the 2023 general election.”
