The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced intentions to reopen the border between Nigeria and Niger Republic.
The disclosure came from the NCS Area Comptroller of the Sokoto/Zamfara Area Command, Comptroller Kamal Mohammed, during a visit to the Illela border Station.
Mohammed assured stakeholders at the Illela border that preparations are underway for the border’s reopening, pending final approval from higher authorities.
He cited the lifting of ECOWAS sanctions on Niger Republic and the restoration of power supply to the country as factors necessitating the border’s reopening.
The Comptroller urged members of the border community to remain calm and law-abiding, emphasizing that government policies aim to enhance citizens’ well-being.
Following the military coup in Niger Republic on July 26, 2023, which ousted President Mohamed Bazoum, ECOWAS imposed sanctions on the country, including border closure.
However, ECOWAS recently decided to lift some of these sanctions during an extraordinary summit on peace, political, and security matters in Abuja on February 24.
