Bauchi State House of Assembly’s Speaker, Babayo Akuyam, and his deputy, Ahmed Abdullahi, have tendered their resignations during Wednesday’s plenary session.
Mr. Akuyam (representing PDP – Hardawa State Constituency) and Mr. Abdullahi (representing PDP – Dass State Constituency) announced their decision to step down to facilitate the return of former Speaker Abubakar Suleiman and his deputy, Jamilu Dahiru, to their former positions.
This move follows the Court of Appeal’s ruling in November 2023, which removed Mr. Suleiman (PDP- Ningi Central State Constituency) and Mr. Dahiru (PDP – Bauchi Central State Constituency) from office. The court ordered a re-run of the 11 March 2023 general election in their constituencies.
Despite the court’s decision, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Mr. Suleiman and Mr. Dahiru winners of the February 3rd and 4th re-run elections in their respective constituencies.
Outgoing Speaker Mr. Akuyam stated that their resignation was part of an agreement among lawmakers to step down, enabling the former duo to resume their positions. He expressed gratitude to the legislators and legislative staff for their support and cooperation during their tenure.
In response, Mr. Suleiman commended the outgoing speaker and deputy for honoring their commitment. He assured effective legislative actions aimed at improving the welfare of the populace.
