Mr. Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, has criticized Ukraine’s donation of tons of grains to Nigeria, describing it as a national disgrace.
The former Governor of Anambra State emphasized that while Ukraine’s gesture is commendable, it reflects poorly on Nigeria’s self-sufficiency.
In a series of tweets on X (formerly Twitter), Obi urged the government to prioritize investments in productive sectors like agriculture to overcome this embarrassment.
He stressed the importance of addressing insecurity to enable farmers to return to their fields, highlighting the potential for significant improvements in the country’s economy and food security within the next five years.
Obi expressed gratitude to Ukraine for its generosity but lamented Nigeria’s reliance on foreign aid for food assistance, attributing it to years of leadership failure and mismanagement of resources.
He pointed out the stark contrast between Ukraine and Nigeria in terms of land availability, population, and GDP per capita, underscoring the need for strategic investments in agriculture and security to boost domestic production and economic growth.
He called for a concerted effort to transform Nigeria into a productive and self-sufficient nation, emphasizing the possibility of achieving this goal with the right leadership and prioritization of key sectors.
