During an appearance on Sunday Politics, SSANU President, Ibrahim, announced a 7-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government, starting from Monday (today).
He warned of a potential total strike by both SSANU and NASU if the government fails to address their grievances within the stipulated timeframe.
Ibrahim emphasized the vital role of non-academic staff in university operations, stating, “Once our members down tools, no university can function in Nigeria.”
He expressed regret at the prospect of a strike but stressed the need for action when pushed to the limit.Highlighting the challenges faced by university staff, Ibrahim cited difficulties in accessing fuel, scarcity of food, and inadequate medical services.
He underscored the essential contributions of non-teaching staff to university administration and criticized the government’s disregard for their concerns.
Reflecting on previous strikes, Ibrahim recalled an agreement reached with the government in 2022, which included the assurance that no one would face repercussions for participating in the strike and salaries would not be withheld.
However, he lamented that the government withheld salaries of non-teaching staff until September, favoring ASUU members in salary restoration.
Ibrahim concluded by stating that if the government addresses their grievances within the seven-day ultimatum, industrial action could be avoided.
