President Tinubu’s nomination of five individuals for the board of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on February 13, 2024, took an unexpected turn when one of the nominees, Mr. Eke, declined the appointment.
During the confirmation process in the Senate, Senator Orji Kalu disclosed that Eke had personally contacted him to reject the offer, citing potential conflicts with his current role as a consultant with the World Bank and various government agencies and private companies.
“The nominee expressed concerns about the potential conflict between this appointment and his consultancy work with the World Bank and other entities,” Kalu conveyed to the Senate.
Subsequently, the Senate proceeded to confirm the appointments of the remaining four nominees to the CBN Board of Directors. The confirmed members include Robert Agbede, Ado Yakubu Wanka, Professor Murtala Sabo Sagagi, and Mrs. Muslimat Olanike Aliyu.
The confirmation followed a thorough review of the nominees’ qualifications and background by the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance & Other Financial Institutions, chaired by Senator Adetokunbo Abiru (APC, Lagos East).
Senator Abiru, presenting the committee’s report, highlighted that Eke did not participate in the screening process by failing to appear before the committee.
