The Senate Upholds Tinubu’s Authority to Remove FCCPC Boss in response to a motion brought forth by Senator Michael Bamidele Opeyemi, representing Ekiti Central Senatorial District.
The Senate affirmed President Bola Tinubu’s prerogative to dismiss Chief Executive Officers of government agencies, including the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), such as Barr. Irukera.Senator Opeyemi, also the Leader of the 10th Senate, appealed to the Senate to investigate the removal of the FCCPC’s Chief Executive and Executive Vice Chairman, seeking his restoration.
“The Senate should deliberate on the President’s request, as the Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, regarding the dismissal of the FCCPC CEO,” Senator Opeyemi urged.
Following discussions among senators, Senate President Godswill Akpabio emphasized that the President holds the authority, as per Nigeria’s Labor Law, to appoint and dismiss public officers.
“Under the Labor Law, appointments of public officers are governed, and it is not permissible to impose a willing servant on an unwilling master,” stated Senate President Akpabio.
