Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 elections, has voiced his concern over the prevailing economic hardships across Nigeria.
Obi expressed his dismay following the tragic incident involving the death of Comfort Adebanjo, an All Progressives Congress (APC) member, and six others while attempting to purchase discounted rice from the Nigerian Customs Service. The attempt was aimed at alleviating the economic strain faced by many Nigerians.
Speaking at the first anniversary event of the 2023 presidential election in Abuja, Obi criticized the disproportionate allocation of funds by the current administration.
He highlighted the stark contrast between lavish spending on facilities for politicians and the dire state of essential services like major teaching hospitals.
“The hunger protests have united our people across various divides,” Obi stated, emphasizing that Nigerians are united by their shared struggles rather than divisive political rhetoric.
He expressed deep sadness over the loss of lives during the stampede at the Nigerian Customs office, underscoring the desperation of Nigerians to access affordable food amidst rising hunger and food insecurity.
Obi also criticized the government’s extravagant spending on unnecessary projects while neglecting pressing needs such as food security and healthcare.
These called for a shift in priorities towards more prudent and people-centric governance.
