Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Warns Against Planned Attacks on Rallies.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has raised alarm over purported plans by state-sponsored individuals to disrupt its scheduled rallies on Tuesday and Wednesday.
In response, the NLC president, Joe Ajaero, warned that any attacks during the rallies would lead to a total shutdown of services by workers, potentially bringing the Nigerian economy to a standstill.
Ajaero identified a group allegedly backed by the government as being behind the planned violence, aimed at intimidating NLC members protesting against the country’s cost of living crisis exacerbated by government policies such as the removal of petrol subsidy and the floating of the naira.
Despite government appeals to shelve the strike and assurances from the police about allowing peaceful protests, the NLC remains steadfast in its decision to proceed with the protests.
Ajaero emphasized that suppressing peaceful dissent or resorting to violence would not solve the economic challenges faced by Nigerians, urging for meaningful solutions to address hunger and economic hardship.
He reminded authorities that Nigerians have a right to peacefully protest and demand freedom from economic hardships, calling on international human rights bodies and governments to take note of the situation.
The NLC affirmed its readiness to express grievances peacefully during the planned rallies on February 27th and 28th, 2024.
