ECOWAS Leaders Convene in Abuja to Tackle Political and Economic Challenges In a crucial gathering in Abuja, leaders from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) are currently deliberating on pressing political and economic issues affecting the sub-region.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the leaders are focused on addressing the withdrawal of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger Republic from the bloc.
These countries opted out of ECOWAS after the organization condemned the unconstitutional seizure of power within their borders.
Former Nigerian Head of State, retired Gen. Yakubu Gowon, emphasized the urgent need for resolving these issues to uphold the unity envisioned by the founders of ECOWAS. Gowon stressed that differences should not overshadow the noble goals set forth by the organization.
The military regimes in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger announced their intention to withdraw from ECOWAS on Jan. 28, citing concerns that the sub-regional body posed a threat.
They accused ECOWAS of failing to support their efforts against terrorism and insecurity while imposing sanctions on them.
ECOWAS has been actively working towards restoring democratic governance in these countries and has expressed disapproval of prolonged democratic transitions.
The Mediation and Security Council of ECOWAS has urged the concerned nations to prioritize dialogue and reconciliation in resolving their disputes with the community.
In addition to addressing these challenges, ECOWAS leaders will also discuss the political situation in Senegal during the Abuja meeting.
President Macky Sall recently announced that he would not seek an unconstitutional third term in office in the 2024 general elections, bringing an end to unrest that had gripped Senegal since 2021 and resulted in numerous casualties.
