The Kaduna State Government has directed an urgent inquiry into the passing of three healthcare professionals and one patient at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital Kaduna (44 NARHK).
In a statement released on Thursday by the spokesperson for Governor Uba Sani, Mohammed Shehu, the fatalities were attributed to a suspected outbreak of Lassa fever at the Army hospital.
It was noted that three additional patients displaying similar symptoms are presently under care.
Meanwhile, the army medical authorities, in a prior statement, connected the symptoms to what they termed acute Viral Hemorrhagic Fever (VHF), indicating that samples had been dispatched to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) laboratory in Kano for examination.
As per the medical authority, the deceased workers were affiliated with the hospital’s Accident and Emergency (A&E) Department, where a non-military patient had earlier presented with similar symptoms before succumbing at the facility.
However, the state government has verified that all necessary Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) protocols have been implemented at the facility, which remains inaccessible to the public until containment measures are fully implemented.
