Kaduna Electric announced on Wednesday an increase in its tariff for customers on Band A feeders from N206.80/kWh to N209.5/kWh.
The notice, issued by Head of Corporate Communications Abdulazeez Abdullahi, informed customers of the new rate effective from July 1, 2024.
The adjustment affects both prepaid and postpaid customers.
On Tuesday, Minister of Power Chief Adebayo Adelabu defended the Band A tariff as more affordable compared to self-generation costs, noting that this band consumes 40% of the energy in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).
The upward review by Kaduna Electric suggests that other electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) might announce similar hikes soon.
The increase comes amid protests from the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), which opposes discriminatory tariffs and demands a reversal.
Despite the hike, tariffs for Bands B, C, D, and E remain unchanged. Kaduna Electric assured affected customers of a minimum of 20 to 24 hours of daily power supply.
