In a decisive move to tackle environmental challenges, the Lagos State Government has served a 14-day eviction notice to proprietors of illegally erected buildings and structures encroaching on drainage paths.
The announcement was made by Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, following his survey of sites in violation and inspection of drainage clearance initiatives across Ago Palace Way, Isolo, Sangotedo, Lekki, and Ikoyi.
Wahab declared the government’s commitment to implementing legal actions against those who fail to comply, aiming to reestablish order within the state.
“The time for environmental disregard and disturbance has ended in Lagos. We are determined to uphold all pertinent regulations, without exception,” Wahab stated.
Highlighting the significance of public health and referencing the recent cholera outbreak, he attributed it to inadequate drainage maintenance.
“Let’s be clear, climate change is a reality, and so is the threat of cholera. These issues are interconnected, and we must collectively act responsibly and proactively,” he urged.
Wahab disclosed that a 48-hour notice of violation has already been issued to the owners of structures infringing on drainage channels near the Lagos Business School in Sangotedo.
He affirmed that once all notices have lapsed, the state will begin rigorous enforcement of the statutes.
