The Zamfara State government has initiated the construction of an international airport to enhance trade and tourism, Governor Dauda Lawal announced.
The project was officially unveiled by Minister of Aviation and Aerospace, Festus Keyamo, according to a statement from the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris.
The Gusau International Airport is designed to accommodate both domestic and international flights. The project includes a 3.4-kilometer primary runway for large commercial aircraft, runway lighting, and navigational aids.
Governor Lawal emphasized the airport’s role in transforming Zamfara into a prime investment destination, attracting both local and international investors. He highlighted the airport’s potential to improve social interaction, business, and tourism in the state.
The project, to be handled by Triacta Nigeria Limited with JBI Tech Consult as the consulting firm, is expected to be completed within 30 months.
Governor Lawal noted the economic benefits of the airport, including direct air access to the state, which will alleviate the challenges faced by businesses in exporting and importing goods.
Minister Keyamo remarked on Zamfara’s past disadvantages in facilities despite its agricultural significance, asserting the airport’s importance as a social amenity and expressing confidence in the state’s readiness for this development.
“But it is better late than never. An international journalist called me and asked whether Zamfara needed an airport. I firmly believe that having an airport in Zamfara is more than just a matter of commercial viability; it is a crucial social amenity for the people. Looking around today, I am convinced that the state is fully ready for this development,” he said.
