Lionel Messi, the Argentine football icon, envisions concluding his illustrious career at Inter Miami, although he has no immediate plans to retire from the sport.
In an ESPN interview, Messi, whose contract with the MLS team extends through the end of 2025, expressed, “Yes, as of today, I think it’s going to be my last club,”
Yet, Messi, who will celebrate his 37th birthday on June 24, clarified, “I’m not ready to say farewell to football just yet.”
The celebrated eight-time Ballon d’Or recipient etched his name in history with Barcelona, securing four Champions League titles and 10 La Liga championships. He ignited Argentina’s triumphs in the 2021 Copa America and the 2022 World Cup and is poised to represent his nation in the upcoming Copa America in the United States.
Messi’s tenure at Barcelona spanned from 2004 to 2021, after which he spent two years with Paris Saint-Germain before joining Inter Miami in the previous year, quickly adding a Leagues Cup title to his accolades.
Reflecting on his move, Messi shared, “Leaving Europe was a significant change, but being a world champion has allowed me to view things from a different perspective.”
Messi’s presence has significantly elevated Major League Soccer’s profile in the U.S., with sold-out games and his jersey becoming the league’s top seller.
Looking ahead, Messi is considering participating in the 2026 World Cup, hosted by the USA, Mexico, and Canada, while also acknowledging the impending conclusion of his remarkable journey in football.
“My whole life I did this. I love playing ball. I enjoy the training, the day every day, of the matches. A little afraid that everything will end,” Messi admitted. “I try to enjoy. That’s why I enjoy everything much more, because I’m aware that there’s less and less to go and I have a good time at the club.
“How lucky I am to have colleagues and friends by my side. I had a good time in the selection, where I have teammates and friends too, and many of them, and I enjoy the little details that I know I’m going to miss when I don’t play anymore.”
