With the June 12 Democracy Day celebration approaching, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a stern warning against planned nationwide violent protests by unidentified groups.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, emphasized that while citizens have the right to peaceful protest, any form of violence will not be tolerated. Adejobi stated, “The Nigeria Police will protect the rights of all citizens, including those on peaceful protest, but will not allow the violation of others’ rights or the destruction of lives and property.”
The NPF stressed the importance of informing the police and requesting protection for any peaceful protests.
The statement also highlighted that disrupting critical infrastructure, such as the national grid, airports, hospitals, or other essential services, is a criminal offense and will be met with the full force of the law.
Inspector General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has directed all Zonal Assistant Inspectors General and State Command Commissioners to collaborate with other security agencies to ensure robust security measures are in place.
These measures aim to prevent any breakdown of law and order and protect key infrastructures.
The NPF also urged parents and guardians to advise their wards against participating in any unlawful activities orchestrated by disgruntled individuals aiming to create anarchy.
