The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) is set to introduce a new e-visa platform, aimed at simplifying the visa application process for short-term visitors, aligning with the objectives of the Nigeria Visa Policy 2020.
In a recent announcement made by the Comptroller General of NIS, Kemi Nandap, at the 12th Command Course graduation of the Immigration Command and Staff College in Sokoto, the initiative was revealed.
The statement was relayed by DCI Kenneth Udo, the Service Public Relations Officer, on Monday in Abuja.
Represented by Assistant Comptroller General George Didel, Nandap outlined that the new e-visa platform is designed to enhance visa procedures, encourage foreign direct investments, and promote tourism.
The commitment to the e-Border Project was reaffirmed, with plans to install e-gates at Lagos and Abuja international airports and integrate systems like the Advance Passenger Information System (API) and the Passenger Name Record (PNR), aiming to bolster border control and national security.
Nandap called for the revitalization of NIS Divisional Offices and encouraged active participation in Security Council Meetings at various governmental levels to ensure professional interagency collaboration.
She also urged the heads of formations to diligently work towards automating passport application processes to minimize human interaction, prevent malpractices, and improve service efficiency.
The transition to enhanced e-Passports is set to continue domestically and at foreign missions until fully realized.
Nandap highlighted the importance of NIS’s role in the national campaign against irregular migration and the Smuggling of Migrants (SOM), emphasizing the need for ongoing capacity building and stakeholder engagement.
In her commitment to officer welfare, Nandap promised timely promotions, access to affordable housing, and health care schemes.
She encouraged the course graduates to become agents of change and maintain the highest professional standards.
The ceremony concluded with the awarding of the “Passed Command Course” (PCC) to all participants, and the “Dagger Merit Award (+)” was bestowed upon directing staff in recognition of their exceptional efforts.
