The governors of the Southwest region have ignited a significant initiative to enhance food production, aiming to reduce the persistent high prices of food items in Nigeria.
In a concerted effort to achieve food security, the governors have directed the region’s agriculture commissioners to collaborate and devise a strategic plan that leverages each state’s unique strengths.
This development was announced following a meeting led by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The governors also praised the Federal Government’s commencement of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project, which will benefit three states in the zone, and the Badagry to Sokoto Highway impacting Oyo State.
They appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to prioritize the repair of other critical Federal roads within the region, including the Lagos-Sango-Ota to Abeokuta road, the Ibadan to Ilesa expressway, the Akure to Ado-Ekiti Highway, and the Ibadan-Oyo-Ogbomoso to Ilorin Highway.
The meeting saw the attendance of all six governors: Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, Seyi Makinde of Oyo, Dapo Abiodun of Ogun, Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo, Ademola Adeleke of Osun, and Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti. Sanwo-Olu was unanimously elected as the new chairman of the forum, succeeding the late Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State.
The governors reiterated their support for the Regional Security Network Amotekun and disapproved of the Yoruba Nation agitation.
They reaffirmed their endorsement of state police and expressed contentment with the Southwest’s status as the most peaceful region in the country.
Lastly, the governors called upon the Senate to align with the House of Representatives in passing the Southwest Development Commission Bill, a move that would further solidify the region’s commitment to growth and stability.
