In the aftermath of the Super Eagles’ unexpected 2-1 loss to the Benin Republic in the World Cup 2026 qualifiers, head coach Finidi George has issued a call to arms for greater dedication from his squad.
With a disappointing tally of just three points from four matches, Nigeria’s path to the World Cup faces challenges.
The match saw Raphael Onyedika netting a goal for Nigeria, the three-time African champions. However, the team from Benin, under the guidance of Gernot Rohr, overturned the lead with strikes from Jodel Dossou and Steve Mounie.
Looking ahead, the Super Eagles are set to face Rwanda in March 2025. Coach Finidi has emphasized the importance of perseverance, insisting that the team must continue to fight and not concede defeat in their qualification journey.
“There is no other formula for that. We have to see how the players will start the new season and see how we can get the best out of them.
“Everybody must be committed because with that commitment, we will win games.
“If we can win games, the battle will still be there, we can’t throw in the towel because we have just three points, we have to find a way to get these players back in a way for them to perform,” Finidi said.
