The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has summoned former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso in connection with an alleged N2.5 billion pension fraud.
According to sources, Kwankwaso has already been questioned by EFCC investigators.
An anonymous source within the EFCC confirmed, “The commission invited Kwankwaso regarding the alleged N2.5bn Kano pension funds. He has provided some details to interrogators.” Another source added that the investigation is ongoing.
When reached for comment, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale declined to comment on the matter.
In March 2023, the EFCC’s Abuja Zonal Command handed over documents of properties and 324 houses recovered for Kano State pensioners, following a final forfeiture order from the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The properties, valued at N4.1bn, were part of a pension trust fund fraudulently denied to the pensioners by two successive Kano State administrations.
The EFCC’s investigation, initiated by a petition from Concerned Kano State Workers and Pensioners, revealed that the Kano State Pension Trust Fund had entered into a tripartite agreement to build housing estates, contributing N4.1bn out of a total N41bn project cost.
However, the houses were sold to associates of two former governors, leaving pension trustees with incomplete and low-budget houses.
The EFCC successfully secured a final forfeiture order for the properties, which were then handed over to the pension fund trustees in March 2024.
