On Tuesday, May 28, the Senate passed the National Anthem Bill 2024, aiming to reintroduce Nigeria’s old anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.”
Last week, the Senate had moved the bill through its first and second readings, forwarding it to the committee on judiciary, human rights, and legal matters for further review.
The bill’s passage followed the consideration and approval of the committee’s report, presented by its chairman, Senator Mohammed Monguno (APC – Borno North).
The House of Representatives also passed the bill for a third reading last week.
Senator Monguno emphasized the bill’s importance, noting that the national anthem embodies the country’s history, culture, and people. He stated, “The proposed bill is apt, timely, and important.”
The Senate then reviewed and approved the bill’s clauses, moving it forward in the legislative process.
“Nigeria, We Hail Thee” was Nigeria’s first national anthem, adopted on October 1, 1960, and replaced in 1978 by the Olusegun Obasanjo military regime.
