In a significant development, the Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has issued an order for the immediate arrest of the deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero.
The directive comes amid allegations that Bayero’s actions were causing tension within the state.
According to a statement released by Mr. Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the spokesperson for the Governor, the former Emir was clandestinely brought into Kano city last night, attempting to forcefully reclaim his position in the palace—just two days after being deposed by the Governor.
The situation escalated when the new Emir, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, arrived at the palace around 1:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2024.
Accompanying him were the Governor, the Deputy Governor, the Speaker of the State Assembly, and other high-ranking government officials.
As the Chief Security Officer of the state, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has directed the Commissioner of Police to promptly arrest the deposed Emir.
The charges against him include disturbing public peace and jeopardizing the relative tranquility that the state currently enjoys.
Bayero’s whereabouts had remained unknown since his deposition on Thursday.
However, he resurfaced in Kano on Saturday, greeted by a crowd of supporters.
Meanwhile, the state House of Assembly recently repealed the law signed by ex-Governor Abdullahi Ganduje on December 5, 2019.
This law had split the emirate into five and appointed separate Emirs for each division.
In a swift move, Governor Yusuf reinstated Muhammadu Sanusi as the 16th Emir of Kano. Sanusi received his letter of reinstatement at the Government House in Kano, and he subsequently led Jumat prayers there.
