In a landmark decision, the Kano State House of Assembly has passed the Kano State Emirate Council Law 2024, which effectively removes Alh. Aminu Ado Bayero from the position of Emir of Kano and reinstates former Central Bank Governor, Lamido Sanusi, to the role.
The law’s passage has led to the replacement of Bayero’s portrait with Sanusi’s in the Coronation Hall of the Government House in Kano, signaling a change in leadership.
The amendment to the Kano State Emirates Council Law, which was finalized after a third reading in the Assembly, mandates that all traditional titles created after December 5, 2019, be reverted to their status prior to that date.
The new legislation also tasks the Commissioner for Local Government with managing the transition, including the handling of assets and liabilities from the abolished emirates and the structures established under the previous law.
Governor Abba Yusuf is anticipated to endorse the amendment, which aims to restore the Kano Emirate System to its pre-December 5, 2019, structure.
Reports indicate that Aminu Bayero left the palace and Kano on May 22, currently residing in Ilorin, while Sanusi’s reappointment as Emir by Governor Yusuf’s administration is said to be confirmed.
Sanusi, who ascended to the throne during Kwankwaso’s tenure and was later deposed by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, faced exile and scrutiny over the emirate’s finances.
The Ganduje administration had expanded the emirate system to include Bichi, Karaye, Rano, Gaya, and Kano as First Class Emirates, but the current Assembly has now nullified these additions.
