The ascension of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin to the esteemed position of Olubadan is on the cusp of realization, pending the sanction of Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, as reported by Commissioner Segun Olayiwola.
The nomination of Olakulehin, an 88-year-old distinguished entrepreneur, politician, and the Balogun of Ibadanland, has successfully navigated all requisite stages and now awaits only the governor’s final endorsement.
Governor Makinde, currently abroad, is anticipated to return shortly and grant his approval, having been out of the country since the previous month.
The late Oba Lekan Balogun’s successor, Olakulehin, was recently visited by a state delegation comprising Chief Ayorinde (SAN), the Chairman of the Governor’s Advisory Council; Commissioner Olayiwola; and Senator Monsurat Sunmonu, a council member.
They delivered the governor’s felicitations and assurances of esteem to the Olubadan-elect.
In light of rumors questioning Olakulehin’s health and fitness for the demanding traditional role, the visit served to verify his well-being, a vital criterion as per the 1957 Olubadan Chieftaincy Declaration.
The delegation confirmed Olakulehin’s robust health, dispelling concerns and setting the stage for Governor Makinde’s prompt ratification of his nomination upon return.
Commissioner Olayiwola noted that the decision process is momentarily paused with the governor’s absence, stating, “When His Excellency returns, I will take the file to him. That is when we will know the next action on the issue. But the file is still with us for now.”
