In a recent Federal Executive Council (FEC) session presided over by President Bola Tinubu, two distinguished individuals were officially inducted as commissioners of the National Population Commission (NPC).
The oath of office was administered to Mr. Fasuwa Johnson and Dr. Amid Tadese Raheemz, hailing from Ogun and Osun States respectively, in a ceremony held at 12:15 pm within the prestigious Council Chamber of the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja.
This event marks a milestone following President Tinubu’s request on February 13 for the Senate’s confirmation of Raheem’s commission.
Johnson received his confirmation on March 6, three months after this initial request.
Previously, on November 8, 2023, President Tinubu had appointed 20 federal commissioners to the NPC, with nine incumbents being reappointed. The majority, totaling 17, were sworn in on March 14.
Johnson, an Ogun State native born in 1973, boasts an educational background with a Master of Science in Geography and a Master in Business Administration from the University of Ibadan and Ladoke Akintola University, respectively.
His political career includes a tenure as a member of the Ogun State House of Assembly, where he also chaired the House Committee on Works and Infrastructure.
Dr. Raheem, born on December 12, 1964, in Iwo, Osun State, is an alumnus of Obafemi Awolowo University with degrees in Political Science and Public Administration.
His extensive experience includes roles as Commissioner for Water Resources & Energy in Osun State and as a member and Chief Whip of the Osun State House of Assembly.
Prior to his appointment, Dr. Raheem led the Department of Public Administration at Fountain University in Osogbo, Osun State.
The FEC session also included a poignant moment of silence to honor the memory of two late former cabinet members, Prof. Fabian Osuji and Prof. Ogbonnaya Onu, who had served the nation in various capacities.
The council then proceeded to a private meeting, which is part of a series of sessions that have been ongoing since the council’s formation on August 28, 2023.
It was noted that the council convenes specifically to deliberate on submitted memoranda, as clarified by Information Minister Mohammed Idris on October 16, 2023.
“The President has approved that Federal Executive Council meetings will now be happening on Mondays, as opposed to the traditional Wednesdays that we are used to.
“So FEC meetings have been moved to Mondays. Of course that does not mean that it has to happen every week.
“If there are no issues to discuss, it will be skipped to next week,” Idris explained.
