Daniel Ojukwu, associated with the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), has regained freedom after being held in police detention.
Initially detained on May 1 following an encounter with police officers in Lagos, Ojukwu’s location remained unknown to his family and FIJ for two days post his disappearance.
Subsequently, the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the Inspector General of Police transferred him to the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) in Abuja, followed by a move to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID).
FIJ’s legal team faced demanding bail conditions set by the police for Ojukwu’s release.
The tide turned when civil society groups organized a protest at the Force Headquarters, advocating for Ojukwu’s freedom. This collective action contributed to his release on Friday.
FIJ’s legal representative, Abimbola Ojenike, expressed that Daniel Ojukwu’s ordeal stands as a stark instance of human rights infringement and an abuse of police authority targeting a member of the press.
