In a jubilant display, the staff of the University of Cross River State (Unicross) celebrated the suspension of Vice Chancellor Professor Augustine Amgba.
The three unions representing the workers—Academic Staff Union of Universities, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU)—expressed gratitude to Governor Senator Bassey Otu for supporting the decision to remove the Vice Chancellor.
The workers had endured five months of working without salaries and allowances, prompting demonstrations against Professor Amgba.
The situation escalated when the workers locked the school gate in protest.
Despite their plight, the Vice Chancellor remained unresponsive during his time in Europe.
The Governing Council acted swiftly, suspending Professor Amgba and directing him to hand over to Vice Chancellor Academics, Professor Stephen Oshang of the Faculty of Agriculture.
The State Government’s official response to the suspension is still pending.
